This page describes how to use the Urath character record sheet. Italics The latest version of the template has many fields in italics. These fields are the ones where you are expected to enter data for your character. Some may already have a default value (for example, the Size line on the first sheet has "Medium" filled in already); but you can type over these fields. If the text is not in italics, you should not over-type these fields directly. Check the Formula bar in Excel; you may be able to adjust the Formula (for example, for some skills, adding a +2 for a special modifier at the end of the formula), or you may need to put the information in elsewhere. Auto-Calculating Fields Many fields calculate for you, based on what you enter in other fields. For example, while you are expected to enter your character's ability scores, the sheet will auto-calculate the bonuses from the scores. Normal set of scores and Current set of scores The sheets use the ability modifiers listed under the Current Modifier column for all calculations. The Normal Ability Score and Normal Modifier columns are so that you can record what your "Normal" scores are. The "Current" columns are for holding the values after spell effects, magic items, and ability damage/drain. When you receive a new spell (Bull's Strength, etc.), a magic item, or damage that temporarily changes your ability score, change this score. All other fields that use the ability modifier will automatically update. All skills, for example, will adjust themselves. Entering Levels In the box labeled "Current Level", enter your current actual Level (not counting Level Adjustment). This determines the Max Ranks for skills. The levels sheet is designed to record information about level-by-level gains. Enter the changes in your Base Attack Bonus, rolled hit points, Base Fortitude Save, Base Reflex Save, Base Will Save, and so on. If the class level you took adds to Animal companions, enter 1 (or 1/2) under the Animal Companion column. If the class level you took adds to Familiar abilities, enter 1 under the Familair Advancement column. Likewise, if the class level you took adds to Special Mount abilities, enter 1 under Mount Advancement. Remember, Urath uses fractional advancement, so every level probably adds at least something to every column. Creating a new character The steps I find most efficient in creating a new character are these: 1) Roll up the character 2) Fill in the basic information (Biped or Quadruped, Size, Gender, Name, etc.) 3) Enter the ability scores in both the Normal and Current columns 4) Enter the level-based information on the Levels sheet 5) Put the Armor and Weapon information in the appropriate boxes on the front page 6) Enter the skill ranks and any special modifiers that apply on the skills page 7) Enter the feats, special abilities, and gear on the appropriate page |
